Ethan Abdul-Massih of Ruthven is “pretty happy” about the $8,000 raised last month during the sixth-annual Super Ethan’s Steps for childhood cancer.

Ethan, 8, said the money raised will be used for “games” and “electronics” for kids going through the same illness he had — acute lymphoblastic leukemia, a type of cancer in which the bone marrow makes too many white blood cells, reducing the body’s ability to fight off infection.

Having gone through this, this was our way to say thank you to all the doctors and nurses who helped Ethan.

Since the launch of the fundraiser in 2015, Super Ethan’s Steps has raised more than $55,000 for the oncology unit at the Windsor Regional Hospital and other related cancer-fighting organizations.

Ethan was diagnosed with leukemia in 2014 and is now cancer-free, but still goes for regular checkups at Children’s Hospital in London and Windsor Regional Hospital.

The St. John de Brebeuf student said he walked two km with his parents, Nicole and Charlie.

“Having gone through this, this was our way to say thank you to all the doctors and nurses who helped Ethan,” Nicole said. The virtual walk/run/wheel event was held Sept. 27.
